Writer's Retreat
A poem
A change of scenery does wonders
when loneliness and self-doubt creep in
during the writer’s retreat.
Pile on three layers and
pile on the last few scraps
of firewood.
As the flames devour their fuel
and dance
and swirl
things suddenly feel better.
Scavenging the the logs left behind
by the girl with the little spotted dog
who left her cabin this morning
feels like an adventure.
Nobody saw
and nobody would likely care.
But I care.
Those purloined logs burned
and danced
and revived
a spirit sapped by doubt.

Investing in our creativity is the best way to get a return. There’s only so long we can burn energy without meaningful rest before things grind to a halt. Just as we need to eat and drink the fuel the body, creativity must be nourished also.
